For those who want to specialize without pursuing a bachelor’s degree, we offer advanced specialty certificates in MRI and CT. Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging

Two years: 100% online
Core courses include imaging informatics, pharmacology, advanced patient care and healthcare leadership
Elective tracks allow students to select a focus, with options including advanced imaging credentials, leadership, clinical education or biology/pre-med
An internship capstone course allows the student to work alongside a preceptor in healthcare management or education to explore leadership roles in Medical Imaging

Curriculum Plan

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging is an online bachelor’s degree completion program for imaging professionals with a diploma or associate degree in an imaging science who seek to enhance their management skills, pursue advanced modalities or explore the role of the imaging educator.

This degree will be awarded to students who successfully complete 120-121 credit hours of general education and major coursework. Up to 69 transfer credit hours are awarded for successful completion of an associate degree in any of the following primary imaging categories: Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Ultrasound, Radiation Therapy or MRI.

We also offer certificate programs in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) for imaging professionals who want to specialize without pursuing the bachelor’s degree. The CT and MRI certificate programs each provide 16-22 credit hours of structured education directly related to the specifications for the ARRT post-primary examination. Students who successfully complete the certificate program will receive a certificate of completion and academic credits that may be applied toward the BSMI program in the future.

Is this program accredited?

The Medical Imaging program is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).

Who is eligible for the 2 + 2 Degree in Medical Imaging?

This program has been designed to advance the skills of the medical imaging professional. Candidates must hold an associate degree in an imaging science prior to admission in the BSMI program. The candidate for this program must have ARRT credentials or eligibility in one of the primary imaging modalities: radiologic technology, radiation therapy, nuclear medicine, MRI, or ultrasonography. Radiologic Technologists who hold a diploma in Radiology may be accepted into the BSMI program once all general education requirements are met. Applicants for the Medical Imaging Program must meet all admission requirements in addition to the imaging credentialing eligibility.

When are classes scheduled?

All courses in the baccalaureate and advanced credentialed programs were developed with the working technologist in mind. The curriculum may be completed in a 100% online format or in a hybrid format, which includes clinical rotations.

How are clinical requirements fulfilled in the advanced credentialed programs?

Some imaging courses will have a clinical component. Clinical courses are scheduled by program faculty to any of the program's 15+ affiliated clinical sites. Clinical requirements are scheduled to accommodate both class and work schedules with evening and weekend rotations available. It is expected that students will participate in a prescribed weekly clinical rotation at their assigned clinical site in order to fulfill the required clinical competencies as set by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists. Clinical competencies are required for eligibility to sit for the national certification exam.

Can I receive credit for my advanced credentials?

Lifetime experience credit can be awarded for candidates who hold the following advanced credentials:

Computed Tomography (CT)
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Mammography (M)
Quality Management (QM)
Bone Densitometry (BD)

Lifetime experience credit can help to offset required elective courses built into the online BSMI curriculum.

Can this program prepare me to be an imaging educator?

The online BSMI track offers a subset of elective courses that prepare you to move into the role of imaging educator. The required internship capstone course can be facilitated under the supervision of an imaging educator with activities created to prepare you to facilitate classroom instruction.

Am I eligible for financial aid?

This will depend on your individual circumstances. A large percentage of our students receive aid, which includes a mix of scholarships, loans, grants, work/study, institutional gift aid and federal financial aid.
